For visualization, yes: AWS retired Designer, and this produces a cleaner picture than its auto-layout did. It is not a template authoring tool though. The output is an editable diagram, not a modified template, and it does not validate your CloudFormation syntax.
Yes. Feed it either the source (CDK constructs, SAM shorthand) or the synthesized CloudFormation output. Synthesized output gives the most literal diagram; source usually gives a more readable one.
