DFD level 0, level 1 and level 2: which one to draw
A level 0 DFD, also called a context diagram, draws the whole system as one process in the middle, with the external entities around it (customers, payment providers, other systems) and one labelled flow for each thing that crosses the boundary. No data stores, no internal steps. It answers "what goes in and what comes out".
A level 1 DFD opens that single process into its main sub-processes, usually four to eight of them, numbered 1.0, 2.0 and so on, and adds the data stores they read and write. Every flow on the level 0 diagram must still appear, now attached to the sub-process that handles it. This is the level most assignments and design reviews ask for.
A level 2 DFD takes one level 1 process and opens it again (2.1, 2.2, 2.3), for the part of the system that needs the detail. Draw it only for the processes someone will actually build or audit. To get the right level from the generator, name it in the prompt: "Level 1 DFD for a food ordering system: customers, restaurants, payment gateway, orders and menu data stores".
